Our mascot, the tapestry beetle, Attagenous piceus, represents the family Dermestidae.  The larvae, shown on the left, feed on tapestry, carpets, fur, silk, flour and other materials. The small black adults are often found on flowers.  As termites are classified as pests in our homes, but are essential for the recycling of wood in nature, tapestry beetles at times can be pests, but consistently contribute to the recycling of natural fibers.  This provides an ecological service.
