City Birding by Kenn Kaufman, et al. published in 2003 by Stackpole Books in Mechanicsburg, PA 181p.

This refreshing little book explores birding in unexpected places.  A flock of expert birders each  contribute a chapter revealing the author’s favorite birding site.  Julie Zickefoose in Chicago praises the magic hedge, a 20 ft. wide growth of privet, that welcomes and shelters migrants along the western shore of Lake Michigan.  Paul A. Johnsgard in Lincoln, Nebraska favors a closed land fill.  Quite a few recommend sites damaged by human waste and abuse, but wonderfully still inviting or at least suitable for birds.

A highlight of the book, chapter 9,“Take me to your sewage lagoon” was written by Judy Toups. She extols treatment ponds and marshes as excellent bird-watching sites.  Her descriptive flair makes them as attractive to birders as they must be to birds.

Because most of the birders/authors are professionals at both, they produce a well-written book.
