Epicurean Simplicity 2002. Stephanie Mills. Island Press. 218p. Like Annie Dillard in Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, Stephanie Mills praises nature. She links the joys of the simple life to the Greek philosopher Epicurus. She wants to minimize her contribution to global warming, the loss of species diversity, and the depletion of natural resources. As she says on page 3, “The less I consume, the less harm I do to that which I love.”After growing up in Arizona and attending college in San Francisco, Stephanie moved in 1984 to the rural, upper Midwest. There she writes and appreciates the glories of nature from a simple dwelling in an abandoned Christmas tree farm. This book prompts us to reexamine our own lifestyles.
