The Great Turning from Empire to Earth Community (2006. Kumarian Press) by David Korten builds on his important earlier book, When Corporations Rule the World. In his newest work he praises Riane Eisler’s book, The Chalice and the Blade. She argues from archaeological evidence that prior to 4000 BCE partnership societies and Goddesses prevailed. Very few military weapons exist from these early societies. Over time these cultures were replaced by male dominated, hierarchical societies worshiping a male God. Weapons abound in these cultures. The resulting empires expand their powers with military force. David asserts that a knowledge of our history gives us an alternative to our current power culture. Recognizing that our exploitative cultures are exhausting the earth’s bounty, he urges that we turn to an Earth community where partnership prevails. Our greed for things strengthens the exploitative markets. He urges that we replace economic values with human values as our controlling principle. Rather than buying a new car, we should work with a civil society group to improve mass transit for all. Such action enriches the entire community. Praised by most well-known environmental activists, The Great Turning after a look at where we are offers the prospect of a way forward. It’s visionary. Written November 2007
