I Heard the Owl Call My Name. 1993. Margaret Craven. Mass Market Paperback and Two Old Women. 1994. Velma Wallis. In I Heard the Owl Call My Name Margaret Craven describes the life of a young Catholic priest who serves a Native American tribe in Northern Canada. In that tribe the appearance of an owl foretells death. In Two Old Women Velma Wallis presents the story of nomadic Alaskan natives who, during a severe food shortage leave two old women behind. They rediscover their hidden strengths. Both books include native legends. Both deal with death and the richness of life. Both portray cultural values and survival tactics in a natural environment. In spite of their serious topics, both are positive books. After reading Two Old Women, one of my friends bought several copies to give friends. Review written August 2002 Back to Book Reviews
