The Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight, Waking up to Personal & Global Transformation. Thom Hartmann. 1998. Three Rivers Press. 314p.

Ancient sunlight refers to fossil fuels, energy stored as natural gas, coal & petroleum.  Estimates project that our supply of petroleum will be depleted about 2035.

This paperback book is subdivided into 3 parts: We’re running out of ancient sunlight, How did we get here? And what can we do about it?  In the first part Thom surveys our grim situation.  In the second section he reviews history.  He argues that exploitation and environmental damage have characterized cultures from prehistory to the present.  He subdivides cultures into older cultures and younger ones.  Organized as tribes, older cultures tended to live in harmony with each other and at peace with neighboring tribes.  In contrast, younger cultures practice domination within their group, between groups and over nature.

Our younger culture teaches values that are unsustainable.  He believes that we are intoxicated by television addiction.  In the final section he encourages each of us to reconnect with nature, practice meditation, perform small acts of mercy and live frugally.

Many authors praise this book.  Neale Donald Walsch, author of Conversations with God, describes it as “one of the most important books you will ever read in your life”.
