“When Corporations Rule the World” by David C. Korten. 2nd ed. 2001 published by Kumarian Press. 384p. To the 1995 first edition, five new concluding chapters have been added to form the 2001 second edition. David Korten argues that corporations have usurped the powers of democratic governments. After merging and accumulating wealth, giant multinational companies fund elections, control legislation and evade regulation. In response governments have expanded in size and complexity. Because corporate interests differ from human interests and earth interests, a bleak picture emerges of human and ecosystem exploitation. Without a grounding in spirituality, most US citizens focus on materialism. Goods fail to provide personal contentment or satisfaction with our lives. The author, as founder of “Yes! A Journal of Positive Futures”, with his optimistic outlook proposes positive solutions. He advocates empowering the UN. He would replace the World Bank, World Trade Organization (WTO), and the International Monetary Fund with new people-oriented UN agencies. Conspicuous with the protests in 1999 at the WTO meeting in Seattle, grassroots living democracy movements offer hope of nonviolent transformation of the agenda. They substitute cultural values for materialism. Review written February 2003 Back to Book Reviews
