Wild Comfort, the Solace of Nature by Kathleen Dean Moore. Published in 2010 by Trumpeter Books, Boston, MA. 195p.

Kathleen Dean Moore, Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at Oregon State University, in response to the deaths of relatives and friends has recently written Wild Comfort.

She created a "happiness basket" on her work desk. Daily she wrote items or events that occurred that day that made her happy on slips of paper and placed them in the basket. After several months, she read all her entries and grouped them into categories to begin to understand her sources of joy.

As in her earlier book, Riverwalking, on camping trips and hikes she immerses herself in nature living in contact with the natural world. After watching swallows form mud balls, carry them in their beaks to their nest site and shape and mold them into a bulbous nest with a neck, she collected mud and attempted with similar techniques to build a swallow nest herself. She gained an appreciation of the birds’ skills by trying it.

She was in awe when an uncommon California Tortoiseshell butterfly silently landed on her arm. It extended its proboscis and gently touched her skin for several minutes She treasured this communion.

In her writing she captures exquisite moments with sensitivity and grace. She deeply appreciates the natural world. She recognizes that it is sacred and celebrates the wonder of this.
