Misplaced Blame, the Real Roots of Population Growth. Alan T. Durning & Christopher D. Crowther.  July, 1997. NEW Report No. 5, Northwest Environmental Watch, Seattle , WA . 93p.

Alan Durning and Christopher Crowther debunk myths about the causes of human population growth.  They argue that five factors account for population growth: child poverty, sexual abuse, inadequate family planning services, subsidies to domestic migration and misguided immigration laws.  They present compelling personal stories and statistics from the Pacific Northwest bioregion to illustrate their points.

Women don’t have babies and then become poor; after they become poor, they have babies.  Poverty increases the birth rate by one-third.  Contrary to popular myth, per capita teen births are now lower than in 1970, 1950, 1890 or 1850.

Paige Latin’s first memory from age two is of a yellow bathroom where a man sexually assaulted her.  At age thirteen she first recognized that repeated forced sexual encounters was not the norm.  After horrific years as a prostitute and using drugs, she now educates teens to prevent sexual abuse and prostitution.  She’s become part of the solution.

Armed with this information, smart governments can simultaneously address these five issues, improve the lives of their citizens and halt population growth.
